國家としての「日本」を定義し定礎した天皇。國史を編集し律令を整備した（少なくとも國家樹立のための事業として自覚し意識してゐた）。のみならず、詩歌や舞踏も日本といふ國家の成り立ちに不可欠なものといふ感覺も持ってゐた。それらの文化的事業が開花するのは彼の死後ずっと後のことであった。

メディチ家の侍医の子として誕生。ラテン語やギリシア語を教へられ、フィレンチェの濳主、Cosimo de Medici 138964 に見出されて、フィレンツェ郊外のカレッジに別荘を与えられ、コジモの命により『ヘルメス文書』の飜譯に從事。ついで、Platon の全譯を1469年までに完成させた。これにより文化の「ルネサンス（復活）」が具体的になった。
その後、コジモの私的な『プラトンアカデミ』の主宰的存在となり、そのなかからGiovanni Pico della Mirandola 146394 などの逸材が輩出した。
また、1498年には、（メディチ家をフィレンチェから追放した）Girolamo Savonarola 145298 を「アンチクリスト」としてロウマ教皇庁に告發した文書の作成者は彼であるとされてゐる。

音楽的才能に恵まれ、声楽家（カウンタテナ）、ダンサ、ピアニストとしても活躍した時期もある。
幼時にラテン語、フランス語、イタリア語、ドイツ語の個人教授で身に付け。彼が五歳の時には、当時九歳だった Wolgang Amadeus Mozart 175691 が家庭教師に選ばれ、ピアノを習った。
16歳の時スイスのジュネイヴ留学、法学哲学、物理学から園芸学まで修めた。さらに『千夜一夜物語』に魅せられアラビア語を習得。さらにはスペイン語やポルトガル語も習得する。
Voltaire 169478 とも交遊した。
彼の遺産は、多額の現金やフォントヒルの地所、ジャマイカのサトウキビ農場などだった。これらの資産によって高級趣味人としての生活のなかで、藝術の世界を享受、耽溺した。詩人 George Gordon Byron 178824 からは「イングランドで最も豊かな御曹司」と羨望された。
兩性愛者であった。

｛産業革命期とともに始まった都會化のなかで目立つ顯著な例として、この時代頃からキミョウな「流行兒」たちの一人と私は見る。この『流行兒」の時代は、George Gordon Byron 178824 などを頂点として、Oscar Wilde 185400 まで續き、イギリスの「L’Enfant terrible」の時代を形作る。彼等の多くは高學歴で、知的に美的な生活の享樂者で、俗物を嫌惡する俗物であった。そして、時代の反抗者であり先行者であった。

だが、私が今も聽く、數少ない噺家の一人ではある。
