大友氏の加判衆であった戸次鑑連（立花道雪）の一人娘として誕生。
道雪には他に子がなかったため、七歳の時に立花城の一切を讓られる。戰國時代、稀有な移譲であった。

秀吉は、文祿の役の後、日本と中國「明」との交渉が決裂すると、再度の出兵を決行した。
戰役が始まり、七月に日本軍は朝鮮軍を大破すると、海上と陸上二手に分れて朝鮮半島を席卷していった。
日本の右軍は黄石山城をめざし、左軍と水軍が合計五萬數千の兵力で南原城をめざした。
南原城には明軍が立て籠もってゐたが、日本軍が接近すると多くは逃散し、殘るは明の騎兵三千だけとなった。
大軍のうへに火縄銃を持った日本軍に優勢に經過し、四日目にして落城した。

日本の文藝家（俳諧）、近江國彦根藩士。
松尾芭蕉164494の俳諧に私淑して俳諧を始め、蕉門十哲の一人となる。繪も描いた。

幼少時から漢學を教へられ、また狩野派の繪筆も持たされ、また馬術劍術、槍は寶藏院龍の十文字槍の達人となった。また和歌や俳諧は北村季吟162505などに學んで檀林派を身に付けた。
1692、江戸深川で芭蕉の門を叩き、彼が六藝に通じた才人と見た芭蕉により「許六」と俳號を授けられた。その時の許六の「十團子も小粒になりぬ秋の風」を芭蕉は激賞した。
その後、一年足らずで彦根に戻り、彦根に蕉門を根付かせた。

日向國宮崎、飫肥藩士の安井滄洲の二男として誕生。幼少時、天然痘に冒され疱瘡跡で片目が潰れた容貌になった。
父の影響で學問を志し、成人して大阪に出て篠崎小竹、さらに江戸に出て研鑽した。
1827、藩主に呼び戻され郷里に戻り、侍獨となった。川添小代（鷗外が『安井夫人』で描いた）を貰ひ、藩校の助獨になり父と職を同じくした。藩主のもとで藩政改革に勤しんだがそれを悦ばぬ保守派に嫌惡され、四十の時、江戸に出て芝増上寺に入り、國制などについて考究し、家族も江戸に移し、私塾を開いた。
1862、昌平坂学問所の儒官となった。
黒船の來航時には水戸の藤田東湖180655を介して徳川齊昭180060に意見を求められ具申したが、齊昭の急逝で沙汰止みとなった。

息軒は門下を、明治維新の各界で活躍した人材を多く送りだした。

シアン酸アンモニウムを加熱中に尿素が結晶化しているのを1828年に発見し、無機化合物から初めて有機化合物の尿素を合成（ヴェラ合成）したことにより「有機化学の父」と呼ばれる。また、リビッヒと独立に行なわれた異性体の発見、ベリリウムの発見などの業績がある。
1884/0923：Japan[明治17]「加波山事件」
栃木県令の三島通庸らの暗殺、未遂事件。
福島事件に関わった河野広体（河野広中の弟）等が中心となり、これに茨城県下館の富松正安や栃木県内の民権家が加はった。栃木県庁の落成時に、民権運動を厳しく弾圧した三島通庸県令や大臣らを爆殺する計画であったが、鯉沼九八郎が爆弾を制作中に誤爆させてしまひ、陰謀露見。茨城県の加波山の頂付近に立てこもり、「圧制政府転覆」「自由の魁」などの旗を掲げ、決起を促すビラを配布したりした。警察署や豪商の襲撃もおこなった。が、事ならず解散、次々と逮捕されていった。
七名に死刑、三名が無期懲役。

1885年より、ナンシー水利森林学校に留学中の農商務省官僚で美術に造詣の深い高島得三と交流を持ち、日本の文物や植物などの知識を得たといわれる。水墨画を得意とする高島はナンシーで400点ほどの作品を描いた。ガレも高島から2点の絵画を譲られたという。このような交流が契機となって、ガレは水墨画的なぼかし表現を伴う黒褐色のガラス(のちに作者により「悲しみの花瓶」と命名された）を生み出すに至る。1887年頃のことである。
マルケトリ（marqueterie）：ガラスパーツをガラスへ象嵌する技法。
パチネ（patine）：「古色をつけた」の意味。ガラスの表面を錆色にくもらせたり、濁らせる技法。
「もの言うガラス」：表面に詩の一節や警句などを記すデザインのガラス器についた名前。
ファイアンス焼き : 家業を継いで製作されたもの。型を使った大量生産で日用雑器から芸術作品まで幅広く装飾的な製品を作っていた。これらの製陶事業はガレ亡き後の工房では作られなかった。

1919、自分の農業理論の實踐のために靜岡県田方郡に研究所を設立、本格的に葡萄の研究にうちこんだ。二十年を經た試行錯誤のすゑに1942にかつてない大粒かつ糖度の高い葡萄の交配に成功し、富士山にちなみ「巨峰」と命名した。しかし、時代が戰爭末期で、栽培の難しい巨峰の普及には難澀してうちに逝去した。
