0810大同五年九月に051平城安殿077424上皇が愛人の式家藥子??0810とともに引き起こした、自分が讓位した弟の052嵯峨神野078642天皇への政爭事件（一般に薬子の變と云はれてゐる）の時は、平城上皇の平城京にゐたため、嵯峨天皇の平安京に召還され拘禁される。だが、大納言となった坂上田村麻呂075811が平城上皇の東國への動きを阻止すべく命じられた時、田村麻呂は綿麻呂の同行を求めた。二人は蝦夷地の制壓で僚友であった。上奏は認められ、二人は勇躍出撃し、たちまち平城天皇一行を捕捉した。

平宗盛114785の次男。生後に母は亡くなり、その後は宗盛が乳母にも預けず育てたといふ。平家の都落ち、壇ノ浦で平氏一門が滅んだ時、總大將だった父とともに捕らへられ、京都に連れ戻され、六条河原で斬られて、晒された。享年八（六とも）。

父の宗盛が鎌倉へ送られることに決まった父の宗盛は、源義經115989に愛息との對面を懇願した。許されて對面した時、子は父の膝に乘り、父は泪ながらに子の髪を撫で、亡母が遺言したことを子に語った。聞く者みな袖を泪で濡らした。別れの時が來たが、子は父の袖に泣いて取り縋る。乳母が抱き取って車に載せて、歸った行った。見送った父は「今の悲しみに比べれば、日頃の戀しさは物の數ではなかった」と洩らした。 能宗を預かった關東武士は子は京で處分するやうにと命じられ、車を差し向けると子は先日のことを思って「また父上に逢へるのか」と嬉々として車に乗った。が、車は六条通りを東に向ひ、乳母たちはハッとする。車を降りた幼年は賀茂の河原に愕き、乳母に取り縋り泣き叫ぶ。それを見てさすがの關東武士も同情を催したが、命令はどうにもならぬ。乳母の懷にしがみつく能宗を引き剥がし、首を切った。その首は義經に届けられたが、乳母が後世を弔ひたいと貰ひ受け、數日の後、一人の姥が首を懷に、もう一人の乳母が骸を抱いて、桂川に身を投げた。『平家物語』能宗被斬

慶應四年、江戸総攻撃の日と予定された日、割腹のうへ拳銃で喉を撃ち抜いて自殺した。勝海舟182399らの働きで江戸城開城となったことを知らず、中風により半身不随となった老病の身が足手まとひになるのを懼れてとも、滅びゆく江戸時代と徳川時代に殉じたともと云はれてゐる。拳銃を用ゐたのは、刀でうまく死ねぬかも知れぬと危ぶんだのである。
辭世は、
天津神に背くもよかり、薇摘み、飢ゑにし人の昔思へば
徳川家譜代之陪臣頑民齊川路聖謨、と署名してあった。
江戸時代の終焉、見事な幕引きであった。

蛮社の獄により捕らえられていた、門人・渡辺崋山の身を案じて1840年（天保10年）に病をおして建白書を草し、老中・水野忠邦に提出する。慊堂は建白書の中で、崋山の人となりを述べ、彼の『慎機論』が政治を誹謗した罪に問われているとのことだが、元来政治誹謗の罪などは聖賢の世にあるべき道理がないということを、春秋戦国・唐・明・清の諸律を参照して証明し、もし公にしない反古を証拠に罪を問うならば誰が犯罪者であることを免れようか、と痛論した。この文書の迫力でまず水野忠邦が動かされ、崋山は死一等を減ぜられたという。他の門人として、塩谷宕陰・安井息軒などがいる。 Wikipedia Ja
