佐賀藩士。四十二歳で出家、通稱「神右衞門」、俳號「古丸」。『葉隱』の口述者。

藩主の鍋島光茂が六十九歳で歿すると四十二歳の常朝は、追腹は禁じられて殉死もならず、願ひ出て出家した。藩主の菩提寺で受戒、剃髪して名を「旭山常朝」と改め、佐賀城下より北方の山地、來迎寺村に草庵「朝陽軒」を結び、
「たづね入る法の道芝つゆぬれた衣手すずし峯の松風」と詠じて隠棲した。

そんな常朝を田代陣基が訪ねてきたのはそれから十年後の1710寶永七年三月五日のことであった。『葉隱』の口述が始まった。

The rebellion of the silk weavers begins in Lyon. They are protesting against the non-application of minimum wages between employers agreed between the social partners only in October. Shots of the security forces into the demonstration lead to an open uproar.

江戸時代、紀州和歌山の外科醫者。世界初となる全身麻酔を施した外科手術（乳癌手術）を成功させた。

青州とその母と妻との微妙な葛藤を描いた有吉佐和子の小説『華岡青州の妻』が、華岡青州176035の事績を歴史に登場させた、と云っていいのかも知れない。

Mit der Götterdämmerung beendet Richard Wagner in Bayreuth den letzten Teil des Rings des Nibelungen.

Götterdämmerung (WWV: 86D) ist der Titel des vierten Teils von Richard Wagners Tetralogie Der Ring des Nibelungen, die er als „Bühnenfestspiel für drei Tage und einen Vorabend“ bezeichnete. Den „Vorabend“ bildet das pausenlose Werk Das Rheingold, die anderen beiden „Tage“ sind Die Walküre und Siegfried. Die Uraufführung fand am 17. August 1876 im Rahmen der Richard-Wagner-Festspiele im Bayreuther Festspielhaus statt. Titel und Teile der Handlung greifen die nordische Sage Ragnarök auf.

Lecturer John Ambrose Fleming receives a patent in Britain for the tube period he calls Kenotron.

熱電子放出（エジソン効果）の研究で、整流器として機能する二極真空管を発明。
当初は「発振管 (oscillation valve)」と呼んでいた。また「熱イオン管」「真空二極管」「ケノトロン (kenotron)」「フレミング管」などとも呼ばれた。
合衆国最高裁判所は、出願書類の記述に不備がある点、出願当時既に既知の技術だった点などを指摘し、後にこの特許を無効としている。
この発明は最初の真空管であり、電子工学の始まりとされることが多い。フレミングの二極管はすぐさま鉱石検波器に取って代わり、ラジオ受信機やレーダー機器などに利用され、約50年後になって半導体テクノロジーに置き換えられた。

Mathers died on 5 or 20 November 1918 in Paris.
The manner of his death is unknown; his death certificate lists no cause of death. Violet Firth claimed his death was the result of the Spanish influenza of 1918. While this seems likely, few facts are known about Mathers's private life and thus verification of such claims is difficult.

その後、彼は刑務所の運動場で傷ついた小鳥を見つけ、やがてカナリアに強い興味を持つようになった。やがて小鳥を独房の隣の工場で飼育することが許可され、結果的に彼はカナリアの病気に関する著作を二册出版し、三百羽のカナリアを育てた。彼の詳細な研究はカナリアの生態の解明や病気の治療に大きく貢献し、治療薬を開発して販売するまでになった。
