フランク王國の軍と山岳民族バスクの戦闘はピレネ山脈の中のロンセスヴァリェスでおこなはれた。
バスク軍が現在のフランスとスペインの國境となる峠で、イベリア半島の遠征から歸還するカアル大帝の軍を待ち伏せ、襲撃した。殿を務めてゐたブルタアニュ邊境伯のロランが戰死するなど、カアル大帝にとって唯一の敗北となった。

ロランの事はイスラムと戰ふといふかたちで英雄傳説化され、中世のヨウロパの騎士道に絶大な影響をあたへた。十一世紀に成立した、ロランの活躍を物語る古フランス語の敍事詩『ロランの歌』はフランス最古の古典となった。

日本の陸軍軍人。陸軍大将勲一等功三級。
1945年（昭和20年）4月に鈴木貫太郎内閣の陸軍大臣に就任した。太平洋戦争（大東亜戦争）末期に降伏への賛否を巡り混乱する政府において戦争継続を主張したが、聖断によるポツダム宣言受諾が決定され、8月15日に自害。日本の内閣制度発足後、現職閣僚が自殺した最初の例。

1945/0815：大日本帝國海軍中将 宇垣纏189045、自決

「Ugaki Matome」終戰後、特攻隊機で出撃して自決。

「武人としての死に場所を與へてくれ」と云って、宇垣は特攻隊機に乗り込んだ。高官が死地に向かふ時は階級を示す者を外す習慣だったのでさうして、懷には山本五十六188443から遺贈された短刀を忍ばせた。特攻隊は合計十一機、乘員二十三名。こんな規模になったのは部下の中津大尉が「出動可能の全機で同行する。命令違反と言はれるならそれを承知で同行する」と云ってきかなかったからである。
宇垣が乗った飛行機から電報があり「敵空母見ユ」「ワレ必中突入す」。それを最後に連絡は途絶えた。しかし、アメリカ軍に被害はなかった。宇垣の特攻隊の確認もなかった。
しかし、宇垣隊が歸還することはなかった。

日本の陸軍軍人。最終階級は陸軍中将。正四位勲一等功三級。
「世界最終戦論」などの著作で軍事思想家としても知られる。
当時の陸軍二代派閥の皇道派にも統制派にも属せず、「滿洲派」を自稱。
Ishiwara Kanji was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. He and Itagaki Seishirō 板垣征四郎188548 were the men primarily responsible for the Mukden Incident 滿洲事變 that took place in Manchuria in 1931.

 

Ishiwara Kanji est un officier de l’Armée impériale japonaise pendant l’ère Shôwa et un idéologue nationaliste connu pour sa théorie de « La guerre finale » opposant le Japon aux États-Unis pour la domination du monde.
He was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. He and Itagaki Seishirō 板垣征四郎188548 were the men primarily responsible for the Mukden Incident 滿洲事變 that took place in Manchuria in 1931.

 

敗戰後

Cependant, en 1941, six mois après Pearl Harbour, en raison de son opposition publique au général Tôjô Hideki 東條英機188448 et de ses critiques constantes à l'égard de la stratégie suivie par l'Armée impériale 帝國陸軍 (il est partisan de la paix avec la Chine et d'une alliance avec l'Allemagne en vue d'attaquer l'URSS), il est limogé.
Après la capitulation japonaise en septembre 1945, malgré son rôle de premier plan dans la marche vers la guerre et la militarisation du Japon, il n'est pas inculpé en tant que criminel au procès de Tokyo mais seulement appelé à témoigner à la barre. 

 

Pour son opposition au général Tôjô, Ishiwara Kanji ne fait pas l’objet d’accusation de crime de guerre. Il est seulement appelé à comparaître comme témoin au procès de Tokyo. Il objectera que l’invasion de la Mandchourie était un acte purement défensif. Il critiquera également le président Truman pour le bombardement de civils japonais.
Il meurt à l’âge de 60 ans d'un cancer de la vessie.
