皇族。051平城安殿077424天皇の長男の阿保親王079242の五男。官位は從四位上、蔵人頭兼權中將。歌人として有名で「六歌仙」「三十六歌仙」に選ばれてゐる。『伊勢物語』の主人公「昔男」は業平を見立てたものと昔から見做されてゐる。その後も能樂から落語にいたるまで、日本文藝の特徴である「敗者」の象徴的存在として取りあげられつづけてゐる。業平は「體貌閑麗、放縱不拘。略無才學、善作倭歌」と評された。色事師で學問はないが和歌はうまい。『古今和歌集』0905に三十首をはじめとして、勅撰の和歌集に八十七首が入集してゐる。私家集は存在しない。
