今日も歴史の偶然に唖然となった。
大航海時代のリスボンから海外へ雄飛した二人のポルトガル人が奇しくも同じ日に死んだ。

Diego de Almagro 147538 は大西洋を Francisco Pizarro 147141 とともに渡り、コンキスタドルとなって南米のペルとチリで惡行の限りをつくし、仲間割れの後で處刑されて死んだ。
Fernão Mendes Pinto 150938 は喜望峰をめぐりインド洋を渡り、インドでイエズス會の Francisco de Xavier 150652 の宣教に付きあってアジアの奥をめざして「黄金のジパング」に達し、日本に鐵砲をもたらした。日本や中国の貿易で蓄財し、晩年は故國に戻り、そこで安らかな死を迎へた。
そして、もう一つの偶然が重なってくる。Luís Fróis 153297、同じリスボンのポルトガル人でイエズス會士。ザビエルの衣鉢を繼ぎ、日本への本格的なキリスト教の布教のために日本へ赴き、織田信長153482や豊臣秀吉153798に謁見し、当時の戰國時代の日本について精密な報告をイエズス會に送り、それが『日本史』として最初のヨウロパへの日本紹介となった彼もこの日、七月八日に亡くなってゐたのであった。
アルマグロやピントが死んでから五十九年後のことであった。

鎌倉幕府執権の北条時頼が幕府評定衆の三浦泰村を討ち取り、三浦氏が滅亡。

ペル征服に參加、最初にチリを發見した西洋人でもあった。

Almagro, feeling lost then, begged for his life, to which Hernando Pizarro replied by saying:
Sois caballero y tenéis un nombre ilustre; no mostréis flaqueza; me maravillo de que un hombre de vuestro ánimo tema tanto a la muerte. Confesaos, porque vuestra muerte no tiene remedio. You are gentleman and you have an illustrious name; Do not show weakness; I marvel that a man of your mind is so afraid of death. Confess, because your death has no remedy.
He was executed on July 8 of that same year in prison for strangling tourniquet and his decapitated corpse in the Plaza Mayor of Cuzco. Malgarida, her faithful black maid, took the corpse of her master and buried him in the Church of Mercy in Cuzco.

彼の業績は死後に刊行された Peregrinação 遍歴記 で識られた。内容が事實かどうかは保證の限りではない。確實なのは、彼が1573にリスボンを發ち、二年後にマレ半島のマラッカに行き、東南アジアを見て囘り、中國方面での貿易で富を築き、日本にも渡來して（Francisco de Xavier 150652 に日本での教會の設立の資金提供をした）、といった事實。その後は、歸國しようとしてインドのゴアまで戻ったが、そこでザビエルの遺骸を見て回心、イエズス會に入會。その後、Luís Fróis 153297 らとともに1556日本に再渡來したが、日本でイエズス會を脱退し、1558にゴアに戻り、その年のうちにリスボンに歸國した。

ピントは1544かその翌年に日本に鐵砲を初めてもたらした人物といふことになってゐるが、ピントの來日は1540後半かその後なので、史實と合はない。
彼は、ポルトガルのアジア政策にたいし、キリスト教の布教にみせかけてゐるがその中身は強欲な植民地主義であることを鋭く見拔いてゐた。

彼は生前から法螺吹き呼ばはりをされた。ポルトガル語のダジャレに"Fernão, Mentes? Minto!"「フェルナン、嘘ついた？、嘘ついたよ」といふのがあるほど

これは、ふと氣付いてドキッとした。
1597/0708(慶長02/0524)：Luís Fróis 153297、死去
リスボンに生まれ、1548イエズス會に入會しインドのゴアに赴き、そこで會員教育を受ける。ゴアで日本戰況に行くFrancisco de Xavier 150652と日本人のヤジロウ（アンジロウとも）と出逢ふ。
1561司祭に叙階、語學と文筆の能力を高く評價され、ゴアで各宣教地からの通信を扱ふ仕事を與へられる。
1563、念願だった日本への上陸、布教活動をおこなふべく日本語を学び、翌年、平戸から京都へ向かった。1565/0131(永禄07/1229)、京都入り。以後、布教活動に從事。保護者と頼んだ將軍13足利義輝153665を暗殺した三好一黨から京都を追はれ、堺に非難。翌年の1566ヴィレラが九州へ行くと京都の布教責任者となった。
1569、織田信長153482と二条城で初めて體面。佛教に惱まされてゐた信長に氣に入られ、畿内での布教を許可され、布教は成功した。そのためか、彼の『日本史』では信長にたいして好意的である。
その後、九州に移り、1580に巡察師の Alessandro Valignano 153906 の訪日には通譯として同行、安土城で信長と拜謁。
1583、總長の命令で日本でのイエズス會の活動記録に專念するやうになり、これが後に『日本史』となる。
信長が暗殺された後、覇者となった秀吉は信長の方針を繼承してゐたが、キリスト教の伸張に危機感を抱くやうになり、1587/0724(天正15/0619)、破天連追放令を出した。フロイスは畿内を去り、長崎に落ち着いた。
1590、天正遣歐施設を伴っての Alessandro Valignano の再來日にはフロイスも同行、聚楽第で秀吉と謁見。
1592、ヴァリニャノとマカオに移ったが、三年後、長崎に戻り、1597に『二十六聖人の殉教記録』を遺し、この年の0708、逝去した。
≫ ヨーロッパでは言葉の明瞭であることを求め、曖昧な言葉は避ける。日本では曖昧な言葉が一番優れた言葉で、もっとも重んぜられている。『日歐文化比較』
