≫ あなたがいろいろ想ひ出して書かれたやうなことは最早二度と出来さうもありませんが、それに代ることはきっとやる積りで毎日やっきとなって居ります。しかも心持ばかり焦ってつまづいてばかりゐるやうな譯です。　私のかういふやうな惨めな失敗はただもう今日の時代一般の巨きな病、「慢」といふうものの一支流に誤って身を加へたことに原因します。僅かばかりの才能とか、器量とか、身分とか財産とかいふものが、何か自分のからだについたものででもあるかと思ひ、自分の仕事を卑しみ、同輩を嘲り、いまにどこからか自分を所謂社会の高みへ引き上げに来るものがあるやうに思ひ、空想をのみ生活して、却って完全な生活をば味ふこともせず、幾年かが空しく過ぎて漸く自分の築いてゐた蜃気楼の消えるのを見ては、ただもう人を怒り世間を憤り、従って師友を失ひ憂鬱病を得るといったやうな順序です。

柴田勝家が羽柴秀吉に敗北して自分の越前北ノ庄城に敗走。三日後に自害。

この對戰は柴田勝家･瀧川一益と羽柴秀吉･丹羽長秀の織田政權内での主導権爭ひであるとともに、信長の次男信雄と三男信孝の對立の構圖であった。
賤ヶ岳を敗走した勝家は北ノ庄城に逃れるが、0613、前田利家を先鋒とする秀吉軍に包圍され、翌日、夫人のお市の方とともに自害した。
勝家の後盾を失った美濃方面の織田信孝は秀吉に與した織田信雄に岐阜城に包圍されて降伏、0619、信雄の使者により切腹を命じられた。
瀧川一益はさらに籠城を一ヶ月持続したが、つひに降伏、出家し、丹羽長秀の越前大野に蟄居させられた。

一般に『獨行道』と呼ばれてゐる、宮本武蔵158345がその死の直前、弟子の寺尾孫之丞に宛てて認めた二十一条の修身論、武蔵が處世の信条とした条々、

一、世々の道を背く事なし。
一、身に娯しみをたくまず。
一、よろづに依怙の心なし。
一、身を淺く思ひ世を深く思ふ。
一、一生の間欲心思はず。
一、我、事に於て後悔をせず。
一、善惡に他を妬む心なし。
一、いづれの道にも別れを悲しまず。
一、自他ともに恨みかこつ心なし。
一、戀慕の道思ひよる心なし。
一、物毎に數奇好む事なし。
一、私宅に於て望む心なし。
一、身一つに美食を好まず。
一、末代代物なる古き道具所有せず。
一、我が身にいたり物忌みする事なし。
一、兵具は格別、餘の道具嗜まず。
一、道に於ては死を厭はず思ふ。
一、老身に財寳所領を用ゆる心なし。
一、佛神は貴し佛神を頼まず。
一、身を捨てても名利は捨てず。
一、常に兵法の道を離れず。

｛しかし、老境も死の直前になって、こんな「なし」「しない」を繰り返す細々とした終身論、處世訓を記さなければならなかったとは、武蔵は悟りきれなかった男であった、と思はれてくる。戰國時代に生まれあはせて、彼の野望は下剋上の大名となることであったらう。だが、機會を掴めず一介の劍術使ひのまゝに身を終らなければならない。「我、事において後悔せず」と自分に言ひ聞かせるものの無念殘念、内心忸怩たるものがあったであらう。さうした自分の強い「欲心」を「本來無一物」と教へる佛教の悟りに照らして羞恥を覺えて、慌てて自戒するやうにこんな条文を書きつらねてしまったのであらう、かと想像されて同情を催した次第。

異常な振舞がひどくなっていく國王の精神状態に懸念と危惧を抱いた臣下らは、ルウトヴィヒ二世の廢位を画策し、1886/0612に彼を拘禁して廢位とし、後のことは叔父である攝政のルイトボルトが務めることになった。
ルウチヴィヒはその日のうちにベルク城に送られたが、翌日、シュタルンベルク湖で侍醫とともに水死體となってゐるのが發見された。
その死にいたった經緯、その原因についてはいまだに謎のまゝである。
息子の死の報せを訊いたエリザベト皇后は「息子はけっして精神病ではありません。たゞ夢を見てゐただけです」と呟いたといふ。
