歴史の天使とは ――
左翼とか右翼とか、さういふ片羽根の（それではそもそも空は飛べないだらう）のバタバタした思想ではなく、兩翼揃った（尾翼も付いた）白鳥のタマシヒで日本のことを、世界のことを思ひ考へたらどうか、と左翼右翼のかまびすしいだけの對立の議論を聞いてゐていつもさう思ふ。
今の日本は（明治以來ずっとと斷定してもいいが）、人工の翼が左右バラバラに、バタバタと地上で藻掻いてゐるやうな、きはめてグロテスクでバカくさい動画でしか私には想像できない。
世界全體もさうだ。近代以降の世界は、對立と競爭に狂奔してきた。そして、そのまゝ自滅の道を突進してゐる。
その原因は、ヘーゲルやマルクスが強調した弁証法といふ鬪爭の圖式に原因がある。私はさう思ふ。
進歩のための發展形式、そのための矛盾と鬪爭の生成と解決の無限の階梯、あらゆる種類のモーターが休みなく揺り動かす欲望と羨望、 ……
私は右翼でも左翼でもない。いや、左翼でもあり右翼でもある。兩翼を持ち、尾翼もあればするどき嘴も爪も持った一羽の鳥、かなしみいきどほる白き鳥、ヤマトタケルの魂を承けた日本の白鳥だ。
かうして、私は「きよきまなじり、つよきまなざし」を持った白鳥、左右兩翼、当然尾翼もそなへ、するどき嘴と爪とを持った「歴史の天使」を意識していったのであった。

Takechi Zuizan, also known as Takechi Hanpeita (武市 半平太), was a samurai of the Tosa han during the Bakumatsu period in Japan. As leader of the Kinnō-tō 勤王黨, which supported the Sonnō Jōi 尊王攘夷 ("revere the Emperor and expel the barbarians") movement, he tried to take control of the Tosa Han 土佐藩 and receive the support of Sakamoto Ryōma 坂本龍馬183667, but was arrested for the assassination of Yoshida Tōyō 吉田東洋181662 and forced to commit seppuku 切腹.
He gave orders to Okada Izō 岡田以藏183865, one of the best known assassins of the Bakumatsu period

同日、高市に使嗾され「人斬り以藏」として恐れられた岡田以藏183865も打首、獄門に處せられた。捕らへられた彼は拷問に同志の名を次々と洩らし、それが土佐勤王黨を崩壊させた。司馬遼太郎が描くところの「岡田以藏」とはだいぶ違ってゐたらしい。

Okada Izō was a Japanese samurai of the late Edo period, feared as one of the four most notable assassins of the Bakumatsu period.
He was born in Tosa to the gōshi 郷士 Okada Gihei, who had been a peasant but had bought the gōshi rank. Izō and Tanaka Shinbei 田中新兵衛 were active in Kyoto as assassins under the leadership of Takechi Hanpeita 武市半平太182965.

Aizawa Saburō was a Japanese soldier (lieutenant-colonel).
He assassinated Tetsuzan Nagata 永田鐵山188435 with his sword on August 12, 1935, because he was reputedly putting the Army "in the paws of high finance". Aizawa made no attempt to resist arrest and reportedly said that he "was in an absolute sphere, so there was neither affirmation nor negation, neither good nor evil". After a high-profile trial, he was executed by a firing squad. His actions helped the Tōseiha faction 統制派, which he hated, gain absolute control over the Japanese military.
