日本人の、フランチェスコと同時代の明惠坊高辨117332上人の『樹上座禪圖』（弟子が亡き師匠を思って描いた）、その時の彼は樹上に坐禪瞑想し、その周圍には小鳥たちが集まってきて、その囀りに明惠は深く天地の世界との一體感を感じてゐたことであらう（と私は想像する）と、こんなことをかつて『對のあそび』で書いたのを思ひだした。

歴史学者。史料批判1939昭和14、津田が『日本書紀』の聖徳太子関連記述について、その実在性を含めて批判的に考察したことについて「日本精神東洋文化抹殺論に帰着する悪魔的虚無主義の無比凶悪思想家」とし、不敬罪にあたるとして口撃した。1940昭和15/0210、政府は彼の『古事記及び日本書紀の研究』『神代史の研究』『日本上代史研究』『上代日本の社会及思想』を発売禁止にした。その前に、文部省の要求で早稲田大学の教授も辞職させられた。三月には津田と出版元の岩波茂雄は「皇室の尊厳を冒涜した」として出版法（第26条）違反で起訴され、禁錮三ヶ月（岩波は二ヶ月）ともに執行猶予二年の判決を受けた。津田は控訴したが、1944昭和19に時効により免訴となった。

ヴィクトリア時代のイギリスは産業革命により工場での生産物が商品となって溢れるやうになり、人々は賃金労働者となり、次第に勞働の喜びや手仕事の愉しさを忘れていった。
モリスは人間から勞働から解放し、生活を藝術化させてユウトピアを實現するには、社界を根本的に變革しなければならないと考へ、当時の新思想であったマルクス主義を熱烈に信奉し、活動もおこなった。しかし、その活動は彼を紆余曲折させるものとなった。
｛勞働が賃金と交換されるやうになって、人々は勞働を時間泥棒、生の束縛者として呪ふやうになった。ユウトピアだと思った世界がかへってむしろディストピアとなった。モリスはかうした逆説に氣付くことはなかった。それは彼がまだ手仕事の世界で作業してゐたからである。
