源氏との戰の總大將となって西海の屋島･壇ノ浦に戰ひ負けて、平氏滅亡の當主となる。が、その死に樣で生き恥を掻いた。戰に負けて西海に身を投じたが、泳ぎのできる彼は死にきれずにゐたところを息子の清宗ともども源氏方に引きあげられた。
京都に運ばれ、さらに鎌倉へと連行される。宗盛は源頼朝114799に卑屈に助命を乞ひ、大將らしからぬと嘲笑された。さうして、また京都にもどされる途中、源義經115989の命により近江國の篠原宿で斬首になった。享年三十九。

福岡藩士の長男として生まれ、幕末維新の時代に苦勞し、西洋の知識によって政事にめざめ、諸國遊學に旅立ち、江戸の東京では山岡鐵舟183688の門人となったりして歸郷、1884、二十歳となった茂丸は友人から借金して伊藤博文182109暗殺のため上京、鐵舟の紹介状を使って面會に成功するが、伊藤に逆に諭され、各地を轉々としてゐたが、
銅鏡の頭山滿185544と出會ひ、信服して以後行動を伴にするやうになり、福岡に政治結社の玄洋社を設立するために、筑豊炭田を取得し、九州鐵道を創業したりした。玄洋社の機關紙などの創刊にも關はった。
その後、1894には同郷の先輩にあたる金子堅太郎185342の知遇を得て、その感化を受け、直接の政事行動よりも裏面の、Fixer 的な行動へと傾斜して、玄洋社からも離れた。文筆も立つ彼は新聞人とも知り合ひ、政財界に人脈を廣げていった。
そして、いつしか政界の黒幕的存在へとなっていった。
満州鐵道を設立したのも彼であった。
大正時代に入ると、茂丸は郷土福岡の經濟發展に意を用ゐた。博多港の整備に着手、また関門トンネルの民間出資を募って許可申請を出したが政府は許可しなかった。
この怪物的な明治人の長男が、なんと日本文藝史上、唯一無比の怪作『ドグラ･マグラ』をモノした夢野久作188936である。この息子が書いた小説を讀んだ父は「夢の久作の書いたごたる小説じゃね」と評した。夢の久作は彼等の地方で「夢想家」といふ意味。これを筆名にして、息子直樹は本格的に小説家の道に進んでいく。
そして、この大正時代の二代目が生んだ三代目が杉山龍丸191987で、この人がまた父とも祖父とも違ふタイプの偉人で、インドの緑化を志して、私財をなげうって實行に及ぶのである。日本政府は一切援助しなかった。その功績を學會は無視し、財團法人認可申請もいまだ認められてゐない。それでも、彼が主導して植ゑた樹木は青々とインドパキスタンに根付いてゐる。
まことに以て明治大正昭和の日本近代をもの語るにふさはしい一族を杉山家の三代に思ひ見た私なのであった

この繪を見てヒトラは「青い馬などゐない」ときはめて幼稚な、一時は画筆に一生を托さうとした男が口にするとは到底思はれない一語を發した。あまりに素朴な感想に、日本では白馬をどうして青馬と呼ぶやうになった、小一時間話してやりたくなったが、それはともかく、かうしてドイツに「焚書坑儒」が始まったのであった。現代の狂氣と病氣を帶びた藝術はユダヤ人と重なって淨化の對象とされたのであった。
