今日、0715は Walter Benjamin 189240 がドイツのどこかで誕生した日だ。
そのベンヤミンが自殺することになるその年に`Über den Begriff der Geschichte`と題した二十の斷章からなるエッセイを書いた。そのなかの九番目の章に、彼が Paul Klee 187940 の描いた`Angelus Novus`に啓示されて彼の「歴史の天使」を素描したものがある。私はこれに觸發されて、自分の「歴史の天使」を構想し造形していったのであった。
≫ IX（原文）„Es gibt ein Bild von Klee, das Angelus Novus heißt. Ein Engel ist darauf dargestellt, der aussieht, als wäre er im Begriff, sich von etwas zu entfernen, worauf er starrt. Seine Augen sind aufgerissen, sein Mund steht offen und seine Flügel sind ausgespannt. Der Engel der Geschichte muß so aussehen. Er hat das Antlitz der Vergangenheit zugewendet. Wo eine Kette von Begebenheiten vor uns erscheint, da sieht er eine einzige Katastrophe, die unablässig Trümmer auf Trümmer häuft und sie ihm vor die Füße schleudert. Er möchte wohl verweilen, die Toten wecken und das Zerschlagene zusammenfügen. ≫ （WP.enにあった英譯）A Klee painting named Angelus Novus shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.
≫ （野村修譯による日本語）『新しい天使』と題されているクレーの絵がある。それにはひとりの天使が描かれており、天使は、かれが凝視している何ものかから、いまにも遠ざかろうとしているところのように見える。かれの眼は大きく見開かれていて、口は開き、翼は拡げられている。歴史の天使はこのような様子であるに違いない。かれは顔を過去に向けている。ぼくらであれば事件の連鎖を眺めるところに、かれはただカタストローフのみを見る。そのカタスロローフは、やすみなく廃墟の上に廃墟を積み重ねて、それをかれの鼻っさきへつきつけてくるのだ。たぶんかれはそこに滞留して、死者たちを目覚めさせ、破壊されたものを寄せ集めて組み立てたいのであろうが、しかし楽園から吹いてくる強風がかれの翼にはらまれるばかりか、その風の勢いが烈しいので、かれはもう翼を閉じることができない。強風は天使を、かれが背中を向けている未来のほうへ、不可抗的に運んでゆく。その一方ではかれの眼前の廃墟の山が、天にとどろくばかりに高くなる。ぼくらが進歩と呼ぶものは、＜この＞強風なのだ。

｛十字軍、聖地巡禮のTourism感覺＝巡禮 peregrinus の意識のはうが強く、聖戦としての「十字軍」が使はれだすのは第一次十字軍より百年ほど後のことであった。
｛当時の貴族連中に戦闘はsportのやうなものであった。十字軍に參加する騎士は貴族でも相續權を持たない者が、下級の貧乏騎士の宗教的情熱よりも世俗的欲望の持主であった。十字軍に參加するには支度金が必要であった。或種の投資のやうなものであった。かうした彼等は聖地に行き、そこに「王國」を建國したりもした。
｛中世のヨウロパが繰り返しおこなった十字軍Eventには、次の時代の大航海時代と同じ精神が働いてゐたと見れば、西洋史は一貫した相貌を帶びてくる。ヨウロパ人は常にフロンティア精神を本能として抱いてゐのだ。それがロウマ人の開拓行動に現れ、それがヨウロパ人の遺伝子となり、十字軍の陸上の擴張行動となり、陸地が終ると海洋に出て行き、新大陸を「發見」し、地球が丸いことを確認すると、今度は空へ、その本能を向かはせる。飛行機を飛ばし、ロケットを飛ばし、衛星を打ち上げて、地球外への進出を思ひ描く。どこまで行っても同じ精神、同じ本能が彼等を支配してゐるのだ。
NearEast は十字軍國家の亂立で、一時、もう一つのヨウロパ諸國の樣相さへ漂はせた。つまり、大航海時代にアメリカ大陸で演じられたことがこの聖地の周邊でも演じられたのであった。
