0889/0614(寛元01/0513)：高望王、臣籍降下して「平高望」となる

桓武天皇の曾孫となる高望王が「平」を賜姓され臣籍降下、上總介に任じられ平高望となって東國に土着する。四つある平氏の一つの始祖となる。

平高望??????　葛原親王の三男、高見王の子、寛平元年五月十三日、59宇多定省086731天皇により平朝臣を賜姓され臣籍降下して平高望と名乘った。

「平」氏には、桓武天皇から出た「桓武平氏」、仁明天皇からでた「仁明平氏」、文徳天皇から出た「文徳平氏」、光孝天皇から出た「光孝平氏」とあるが、後世に名を成したのは殆どが葛原親王の流れを汲む桓武平氏であり、武家として活躍したのは關東に土着した「板東平氏」の流れのみである。
｛しかし、この始祖である高望王の父となる高見王の存在があやふやで、その父とされる葛原親王との繋がりが怪しいものとなる。しかも、高望王の生歿の記録が確かでない。勃興した武家にはよくある話ではあるが。

「願はくはこれを語りて平地人を戰慄せしめよ。この書のごときは陳勝呉廣のみ」と、彼の學問的出發點の記念碑となる『遠野物語』の序文で若き（当時三十六歳）柳田國男187562は息卷いたが、その百篇あまりの小話は、平地人であるはずの私を殆ど「戰慄せしめ」なかった。もう時代が違ひすぎてゐたせゐにちがひない。
それらを讀んでなほさら私に不思議になってきたことは、冒頭に置かれて、あまりに印象的であった「願はくは」の一文であった。こんな昔の小話集にしてはあまりにも大仰な口吻、しかもその後には「この書のごときは陳渉呉廣のみ」と續くのである。
「陳渉呉廣」とは、つまり「關羽や劉邦」が出るまへに天下をめざしてゐた武將の名で、云はばこの書はこれから以後の自分の作品なり研究の「前座」のやうなものだ、といふ意氣込みが思はず書かせた、とでも云ったところなのだらうか。
自費の處女出版（この本の前に一册出してはゐるが）にしても、東北の小村の説話を集めただけの『遠野物語』の内容とはあまりにも不釣り合ひな、意氣込みの強い文章が奇妙に印象に殘って、『遠野物語』と云へばこの一文を思ひ出してしまふ始末なのであった。
