今日、五月三十一日は、フランスの天才数學者 Évariste Galois 181132 が決鬪により二十歳にして死んだ日である。

二十歳「Vingt ans」はつい最近、Paul Nizan 190540 の有名なセリフで思ひだしたばかりであった。
ガロワの死に際の言葉にも「Vingt ans」が出てくる。

決鬪により腹を撃たれて、担ぎこまれた病院にかけつけた弟のアフルレッドに兄は「Ne pleure pas, j'ai besoin de tout mon courage pour mourir à vingt ans! （泣くな。二十歳で死ぬために僕はありったけの勇氣を要したんだ）」と呟き、それがガロワの最後の言葉になったといふ。夕方には腹膜炎を併發し、翌日午前十時に絶命した。まさに、二十歳の死であった。

「二十歳で死ぬために自分のすべての勇氣を必要とした」とはまるで自殺者の口振りではないか？。
決鬪について、ガロワには、それが仕掛けられた陰謀であることの予感なり疑念なりがあったのであらうか。それでも出掛けていった。死の願望も働いてゐたのか。
後世から見て抜群の數學的天才であったいふ事實を除いてしまふ（当時彼の天才を評価できる者は皆無であった）と、彼の人生は何一つうまくいかなかった青春であった。自暴自棄の氣分に冒されてゐたとしても不思議ではない。「泣くな」とは弟よりも自分自身に命じてゐたのかも知れぬ。

≫ Ne pleure pas, j'ai besoin de tout mon courage pour mourir à vingt ans! （泣くな。二十歳で死ぬためにぼくはありったけの勇氣を必要としたんだ）
このガロワの今はの際の告白が、そのまゝニザンの
≫ J’avais vingt ans. Je ne laisserai personne dire que c’est le plus bel âge de la vie. （ぼくは二十歳だった。それが人間の一生で一番美しい年齢だなどとは、誰にも言はせない）。
とつながって、物の見事に一對の文章となって、ガロワの（よりガロワらしさを感じさせる）遺言のやうにさへ私には響いてくるのである。

壬申の亂に勝って天下を得て八年、多くは幼少年だった皇子たち（うち二人は兄の天智天皇の子）が成人の年齡に達し、今後のことを思ひ考へた天武天皇と鵜野皇后は六人の皇子を引き連れ、飛鳥より吉野の離宮に赴き、そこで、皇后所生の草壁皇子を後繼者ときめ、彼を中心に全員協和していくことを盟約させた。

草壁皇子より始めて全員が盟約すると、天武天皇は「汝等、各々異腹に生まれたと云へども一つ腹の朕が子と思ふ」と云ひ、六人の皇子を抱き「もし盟約に背けば、朕が身を亡ぼすと思へ」と念には念を入れて諭し、皇后も同様に抱き諭した。

1830年頃の Pont Neuf：後ほど出てくる Évariste Galois 181132 がこの橋の上で、共和主義者のゆゑに逮捕され、その後六ヶ月の刑を食らひ、悲劇的な死へと直行していくことになります。その日がこの橋ができた日と重なるとは、ちょっとした偶然。

ガロアといふフシギな少年の苦難に充ちた生涯　
數學に特化した才能　數學以外には興味が持てない、物理學や工學にたいしてすらも。
數學とそれからもう一つ、政事。共和主義への熱狂。「もし民衆を蜂起させるために死體が必要なら、僕がなってもいい」といふほどの。

1931/0714、ガロワは同じ『民衆の友の會』員のヴァンサン･デュシャトレとともに、國民軍の制服姿でナイフを携帯してパリを歩きまはってゐるうちに、ポンヌフ Pont Neuf で逮捕された。
/1203、有罪判決、禁固六ヶ月を宣告され、サントペラジに収監された。この年の暮にはパリでコレラが流行、ガロワは刑期を一ヶ月殘して1832/0316、フォトリエ療養所に仮出所となった。
そして、そこで失戀を經驗する。そして、そのために決鬪沙汰に卷き込まれていく。

決鬪前夜の0529夜から未明にかけて「僕にはもう時間がない」と零しながら、數學の獨創について走り書きなどして徹夜して、夜が明けると決鬪の場であるパリ近郊のグラシエルの沼へと赴いた。
決鬪の結果（この決鬪には多くの疑問が投げかけられてゐる）、ガロアは腹を撃たれ、そのまゝ放置され（介添人も含め全員が姿を消した）、午前九時頃になって農夫により發見され、病院に担ぎこまれた。
