今日、五月十一日は、犯罪者の日か呟いたほど、犯罪者の記事が續いた。
コロンブスやアメリカ大陸を荒らし囘ったコンキスタドルは犯罪者のやうなものと私は思ってゐるが、それはともかく、
近代に入って、フランス人の Eugène-François Vidocq 177557 が1857年に死んだといふ記事があって以降、二十世紀に入ると、
この日にドイツで封切られた、連續少女誘拐殺人事件の犯人追跡を描いて、映画史上最初の犯罪物、フィルムノワルの魁となったフリッツ･ラング監督の『M』を挾み、
ナチスドイツの強制収容所の勤勉な悪魔を演じ、戰後は南米へと逃げ込んだ（Hannah Arendt 云ふところの）「平凡な惡人」たち、Adolf Eichmann 190662 とか、Nikolaus 'Klaus' Barbie 191391 の事が續いて出てきて、
これらの「犯罪者」たちの履歴に目を通し、人間における惡といふことについて、改めて思ひを致したのであった。
人間を描かうとすれば、惡を描かなければならない。近代以降は特にさうである。
文學は惡を專らえぐりだし、美術は醜をさらけだし、音樂は不協を奏でるやうになった。
刺戟にみちた狂氣の時代、つくづくさう思ふ。
さう思ひながら、ドイツ表現主義の狂氣を帶びた手法で描かれた『M』を見る。
導入部がいい。少年少女たちが建物の中庭で『カゴメカゴメ』のやうな遊びに熱中してゐる。その平和な光景から物騷な話が始まっていく。 ……

１６歳で歩兵連隊に入隊したが、五年後に除隊。その際、除隊證明書を得なかったため脱走兵として逮捕され入獄。
入獄中に偽札犯の一味と疑はれ、徒刑場で重勞働を食らふ。
その後は脱獄と逮捕の繰り返しとなる。多くの犯罪者と知り合ひ、裏社界の情報、犯罪の手口などに精通するやうになり、脱獄と變裝の専門家となる。
出獄するとパリ警察の手先となり、徒刑場で得た情報を賣る密偵となる。
やがて、つひには国家警察パリ地區犯罪捜査局を創設し、初代の局長に収まる。この捜査局がパリ警視庁の前身である。
密告と間諜を常套手段とし、犯罪まがひの方法で摘發をおこなった。
犯罪者と犯罪手口を分類して、カアド化し、各警察に配備するといったかたちで科學的捜査法を導入した。
捜査局を辭めた後は、個人事務所を開設、世界最初の探偵となり、大繁盛であった。

Honoré de Balzac 179950 は直接ヴィドックと面會し、『ゴリオ爺さん』に登場するヴォウトランは明らかにヴィドックがモデルであった。
Victor Hugo 180285 の『レミゼラブル』の主人公、ジャンヴァルジャンも彼がモデルになってゐると云はれてゐる。
他にも多くの作者が彼を取りあげ、ヴィドックが近代小説に及ぼした影響は計り知れないほどなのかも知れない。

1935、親衛隊情報部に入る。
1939/09、WWⅡが始まると1942ドイツ占領下のオランダに赴任。その後、ペタンの親ドイツのヴィシ政權のもとで、ディジョン･リヨンにゲシュタポの治安責任者として赴任。終戰の1945/05まで、反獨レジスタンスの鎭壓に携はり、八千人以上を強制移送により死に追ひやり、四千人以上の殺害に關係し、一万五千以上の拷問の責任者とされてゐる。だが、
第二次大戰後、本來なら連合軍による戦争責任を捌かれるべきであったが（フランスは当然さう主張したが）、アメリカはすでに始まってゐる「冷戦」のために、對ソおよびドイツ共産党員にたいする情報に役立つ男と目を付け、1947からアメリカ陸軍情報部隊＝CICの工作員に採用した。
これに氣付いたフランス諜報機関はバルビの引き渡しを繰り返し要求したが、アメリカは拒否し續けた。が、フランス政府の強硬な引き渡し要求に、アメリカはバルビをアメリカ國外に逃がすことにし、反共産主義のバチカンやイタリアの反共組織の協力を得て、1950/12、華族ともどもイタリア経由で南アフリカへ送り、ペロン政権下のアルゼンチンを經て、1951/0423、ボリビアのラバスに移した。当時のボリビアはアメリカが支援する反共的な軍事政權であり、戰前からドイツ移民系の影響力の強い土地柄であり、チリなどの周邊國には元ナチス党員も多かった。
1957/1007、バルビはボリビア国籍を取得、以後、ボリビアの軍事政權とアメリカの庇護のもとにドイツ系ボリビア人「Klaus Altman」として、歴代の軍事政權の治安対策アドヴァイザになった。
バルビはボリビア国内の反政府ゲリラ組織や共産主義組織のみならず、勞働組合などへの監視も怠らず、1967/10の軍事政權とCIAの協力下でおこなはれたチェゲバラの捕縛と處刑にも關與してゐた。また、ナチス最高のための組織を元党員とともに設立し、戰犯逃亡や武器の密輸などでイタリアの極右政党とも深い關係を持った。
さらには、オウストリアの大手軍需企業とも取引をおこなひ莫大な資金を稼ぎ、すっかり Klasu Altman となったブラビは大膽にもフランスに立ち入ったこともあった。が、
1972、ペルウのリマにおける殺人事件に關與が疑はれたことから彼がフランスで死刑判決が出てゐるバルビであることが判明した。その後、公然と姿を現はしたバルビはみづから自分の正體を明かした。テレビに出演して、親衛隊員の前歴を誇らしげに語った。そして、押し寄せるマスコミに回想録を賣りつけ、また、戰後の西ドイツのゲーレン期間に關係してゐたことも暴露した。そして、自分は戦争犯罪と考へられるいかなる行爲にも關はってゐないと主張した。
ボリビアの軍事政權が續く間は彼の身は安泰であったが、軍事政權への支持を（コカインの輸出などで）アメリカが止めたことで、ボリビアは1982、軍事政權は倒れ社會主義政權となった。そして、バルビをフランスに引き渡すべきとする世論が高まり、翌年フランスに引き渡された。
裁判は1984からリヨンで始まった。バルビは「自分はフランスがアルジェでやったのと同じ事をしたにすぎない」と主張した。
最終的な判決は終身禁錮であり、1991/09、バルビは監獄内で病死した。
