今日は Ludwig van Beethoven 177027 の命日、 ――
私は、珈琲中毒であった（それ以前にワイン中毒だったらしいが）彼が、一杯分の珈琲豆を正確に24粒と數へてゐたといふのを識って、「なるほど」と思って見習ふことにした。
が、一生貧乏、しかも次第に窮乏していく書生でありつづける私は、一番安い袋物しか買へなくなって、豆を挽く機會はなくなってゐた。その代はりと云っては何だが、ピーナツを24粒數へて、これをいい加減に碎いて、常食にしてゐるキャベツとタマネギと豆腐のサラダに加へるのが習慣になった。一日二十粒ほど皮付きのピーナッツを常食すればビタミンEの補給にいいと識った時、この24粒がピンと來たのである。
ところが、今回確認してみたら、24粒は私の記憶違ひであった。どうやら、音樂家の彼のことだから縁起かついで長短調の24の數に合はせたのだらうといつのまにか思ひこんでしまったのだらう。ほんたうはなんと六十粒であった。閑話休題
私は彼の晩年の室内樂（ピアノソロと弦楽四重奏曲）を、バッハの獨奏樂器による室内樂とともに（究極の西洋音樂として）好んで聽くが、それらを作曲してゐた時のベトベンの耳は全然聞こえなくなってゐた。晩年のバッハは目が見えなくなったんだっけ。
耳の聞こえなくなったベトベンは純粹な聴覚を獲得したかに私には思はれた。そこには數學へ、ピタゴラスの數學へと重なっていく音樂のやうなものを感じ思ったものであった。バッハの、對位法の技法とともに。
ちなみに、ベトベンが聴覚を失ったといふのには疑問視する說が後を絶たない。
ベトベンの逸話は私を元気づける。そんな場面が巡り來ることはなかったが、もしそんな機會があったら私もベトベン的に、藝術家が一番偉いのだといふ態度を演じようと思ってゐる。
1812年、42歳の Beethoven は63歳の Goethe と腕を組んで（大の男が、ほんたうに？）散歩中に、やってくるオウストリアの皇族の一行と出會した。Gは組んだ腕を解いて、脱帽して道を讓り一行が通りすぎるのを敬礼姿勢で待った。しかし …… Bはその時に取った自分の行動を自慢げに後になって話した「自分は帽子を被ったまま、外套のボタンをかけ、腕を組んだ格好で一行の眞ん前へと歩いて行った。彼等は脇に寄り、ルドルフ太公は帽子を取り、皇后は眞っ先に挨拶してきた」。また、手紙では、この時のゲエテについて「一行が彼の前に來たときにはほんたうに笑ってしまった。彼は帽子を取り、うやうやしく最敬礼の姿勢でゐた。後から彼の取った態度について思はず云ってしまった。彼等の高貴さは偶々生まれがさうであっただけに過ぎないが、我々は我々自身の才能と努力によってかうなってるんじゃないですか」と。
ま、かういふ人物とは私は附き合ひたいとは思はないけど。
